Welcome to London and Middlesex County

Canada is divided into 10 provinces and three territories. Ontario is one of the provinces.

Ontario is further divided into counties. Middlesex is one of the counties and has eight municipalities with London as the largest city within its boundaries.

About London

London is Ontario’s sixth largest city, with a population of 381,000. London is also called the ‘Forest City’ by its residents. Opportunities are plentiful for newcomers. The city offers work opportunities, education, culture, dining, shopping and fun for the family. But because it’s not a really large city, it’s friendly and easy to get around.

The title ‘Forest City’ refers to the dense forest that covered the City of London during the years immediately after settlement. As the residents cleared the land for development, many trees were cut down. Steps were taken as early as 1851 to replant and preserve the local trees. Today, the practice is continued by ReForest London, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing London’s environment.

The 2015-2019 Strategic Plan for the City of London, speaks to ‘Growing Our Economy’ as one of the areas of focus to strengthen London’s workforce.  To address this need, the Choose London – Innovative, Vibrant and Global: London’s Newcomer Strategy was developed.  This Strategy identifies three strategic priorities:  Enhance Awareness, Facilitate Access and Active Engagement.  Visit the City of London's website to learn more about London's Newcomer Strategy.
